CHANDELIER CREATIVE
RICHARD CHRISTIANSEN'S INNOVATIVE ADVERTISING AGENCY
NYC- Enter a gateway into a frame of mind: walking into the spectacularly gilded and insolently cheeky new doors of Chandelier Creative, a visionary NYC ad agency, you are instantly transported into an unexpected world of art, design and aesthetic gratification. Serving as an audaciously visual homage to the agencies mission statement: the doors support inspiration to stay creatively charged. The brainchild of creative director, Richard Christiansen, these doors represent the height of design from an unceremonious approach and serve as a pre-cursor to the brilliantly sophisticated irreverence of Chandelier Creative. The doors inception reflects the agencies unconventional style as taste makers by creating an electronic baroque: blending franchise capitalism with movie fantasy and exploring the relations between media and topological surface. Chandelier is of the mindset that brands tend to attract people who share their value. And Chandelier’s values are about creativity being a destination. In an increasingly saturated market of forgettable campaigns and tepidly imaginative designs, Chandelier Creative aims at the creation of something never done before in an impossible market place. This uniformity of creativity between approach and aesthetic is what the doors represent; a literal bi-product of Richard Christiansen’s enchanting vision for the new model of a creative agency.
Collision of Design and Technique
This project started as collaborative dialogue with Richard Christiansen from Chandelier Creative . The initial concept was loosely based on "The Gates of Hell", a sculptural work of Rodin, mixed with Richards key words of "dildos and doll parts". The artists of record, MachineHistories, is a co-op comprised of two members who's work stands as an intermediary between art and design. Their collective experience lead them into investigating the development of industrial means for producing non-standard objects. The front of the doors was created through a collision of media and technique. They gleaned thier hard drives, harvesting bits and pieces of past projects sculpting the surface through digital collage. This allowed for an unusual balancing act where recycling digital ready-mades lead to a reclaimed authorship and to the composing of new narratives developed out of over-saturated media. The back of the doors was created by unfolding, [a sort of reverse digital origami] a 3-dimensional digital model of the head of Star Wars hero Yoda, into a 2-dimensional pattern. They used the flat pattern to generate a decorative skin and thus discovered a way of developing pattern and texture as the byproduct. The trim around the edges was based on blending the explicit sexuality found in ancient Kama Sutra carvings filtered through the stylings of Victorian crown moldings.
What makes Chandelier Creative uniquely positioned to envision change? They advocate unexpected delight. They demand storytelling which permeates everything they do. They celebrate all who are bold and adventurous, they know the ordinary is not acceptable. They prefer quality over quantity. They dislike casual Fridays, reject sensible shoes and neverwear cell phones on their belts. They respect brands that are not backward about pushing themselves forward. They believe being like everyone else is being nothing at all. Because everything sparkles under a chandelier.
