#OTD, WORKHOUSE, CEO Adam Nelson had the great pleasure of bringing the legendary The Sugarhill Gang and pioneers of rap poetry The Furious 5 to House of Independents for the two groups very first show on their triumphant co-headline Reunion Tour. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five is widely acknowledged as one of the most important and influential of the early hip-hop acts. The group was honored at the VH1 Hip Hop Honors in 2005 and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, making them the very first hip-hop group in the hall. Their vinyl records and the turntable used by DJ Grandmaster Flash are on display at The Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. The Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" became the first rap record to hit the Billboard Hot 100, reaching #37. Released on September 16, 1979, "Rapper's Delight" is regarded as rap music's first commercially successful recording and the introduction of the genre to those outside of New York's 5 boroughs. The fifteen-minute record kicked off Sylvia Robinson's new Sugar Hill Records imprint which would eventually sign Bronx and Harlem crews Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5, The Funky 4 + 1, The Treacherous Three, and The Crash Crew. #grammys #sugarhillgang #music #furious5 #entertainment #rap #hiphop #culture #specialevent #business #rockhall #workhousepr
